Hello lovely Between the Bind readers! I am so excited to be visiting with you today. I'd like to share a bit about how I came to write Angelien's story and maybe give a bit of advice to future biography writers.
First, here is the blurb of Confidante:
Ok, I'll admit it - My mother in law used to be a sex worker. She worked in a brothel, as an escort and, as a madame in and around Sydney Australia in the late '80s. It's something that she has confided in few people outside her immediate family until me. We are polar opposites in many ways but we get each other - as a result I have become the confidante in her life which is how this series has been born.
The exact year was 1989; Angelien was 32 when she made the decision to enter a brothel to help support herself and her two sons. She quickly became the most popular girl there with her Kathleen Turner looks and her excellent 'acting' skills.
When you decide to write a biography it is very important to make sure you are telling a story that people want to read. Every one of us has led a fairly interesting life at some point, but the question is - is that life so interesting that people want to hear about it, and then repeat it to others?
I asked that of myself before writing Confidante: The Brothel.
By the time I had started writing Angelien’s story, I had already known her for more than ten years and her stories were fairly commonplace for me by then. The best thing I did was start to tell her stories to some friends. If I was out attending a girls night, I would tell some of the stories she had given me to those I was sitting with and found that suddenly all other conversations stopped and I became the centre of attention. The next time we went out, I would be asked for more stories – the girls I know kind of became voyeurs in a life that not one of them was willing to lead, and it fascinated them.
The best advice I have is to start telling the story to others, if their eyes glaze over – it’s not a good idea; if their eyebrows shoot up and others start to merge into your conversation – then you probably have something to write about.
And now, here's an excerpt from Confidante: The Brothel.

"When her results were in, Angelien received a call from Rebecca to confirm the details of her trial shift. Rebecca also wanted to discuss her working name.
“I see that you have put Tiffany on your form," she relayed. “We already have a Tiffany, so you will have to choose a new name.”
“Oh!” Angelien was disappointed; she had always loved the name Tiffany. “How about Sophie?” Angelien offered.
“No, that name is too young for you. Hmm, what about Isabella?” Before Angelien could answer Rebecca had already changed her mind. “No, your looks aren’t exotic enough – you’re too blonde.”
“Don’t be ridiculous, that’s a butch name! Aha! I know, Diana! Diana suits you perfectly, and we haven’t had a Diana here in years. I think that will do nicely.”
So Diana it was. From that day, Angelien used the name whenever she worked in the industry and kept it even when she became a madame in her own escort agency.
***On the Friday night of her trial, Angelien found herself sitting in a room with five other girls while they all waited for the first client of their shift. She had met them as she arrived, and they had introduced themselves in the change room. The previous shift hadn’t finished yet, and they all stood around talking. Angelien mostly listened to the chatter of the girls. If you didn’t know any better, you would think that you were just listening to some girls around the coffee urn at any office.
When the day shift girls had finished and entered the room, the volume went up by 10 decibels. It was a debrief about which new and repeat clients came in. They shared some funny stories and spoke of clients that they would like to have come back. Angelien just watched as she couldn’t add anything to the conversations. The girls looked like any that you would see at a bar or disco. Dressed very sexy of course! They made Angelien feel welcome, and some of her tension subsided. When it was time, the girls on Angelien’s shift filed into the other room and said goodnight to the day shift.
They had been waiting for only 10 minutes when the lights flickered on and off. All the girls stopped what they were doing and got into their seats. The door opened and a tall, good-looking blonde man entered the room. Angelien couldn’t believe how attractive he was. She wasn’t normally into blonde men, but this man took her breath away.
“Good evening,” she cooed not realising that she was supposed to be silent. The other girls glared at her, and she shut her mouth. The man stood, looking at the girls for what seemed like an eternity. Finally, he pointed to Angelien and said, “OK, you."
Angelien stood up, butterflies forming in her stomach at the thought of what she was about to do. She led him to the room she had been given for the night, trying to keep her breathing calm, as her nerves attempted to get the better of her.
Standing at the door she could feel her knees knocking together. "Here goes," she said to herself pushing the door open.
As soon as they entered the room, Angelien removed her dress. She was wearing a wrap-around that tied up at the front. She thought that it would be easier and more dramatic to take off. The man shut the door behind them and turned to her with a concerned expression on his face. “Listen, I don’t want to cheat on my fiancée,” he told her.
Angelien fixed a smile on her face while she wondered, Well, what the hell are you doing in a brothel? but said aloud, “Okay, well what would you like to do?”
“Well … if you just lie on the bed with your panties off and legs apart, I’ll do the rest," he instructed.
Angelien obligingly removed her panties and lay down, legs apart, all the while wondering what he could possibly want to do to her. He knelt on the bed, and Angelien thought he was about to go down on her; Oh! This guy doesn’t count oral as cheating. She could feel his breath between her legs and was waiting for his mouth to begin when she heard, “Aren’t you just the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen!”
It was said in the kind of voice you would use when talking to a baby or a puppy. What the fuck, is this guy talking to me? She lifted her head to look at him and realized he was talking to her vagina. Never in her wildest dreams would she have imagined that her first client in a brothel would be a pussy talker!
“And what have you been doing today?” he asked her crotch as if he was actually expecting an answer. She wished she could conjure up one of those pussy farts as an answer! Upon this she realized she was on the verge of laughing out loud. She bit upon her fist in hope that the pain of the bite would stop her body from shaking with silent laughter.
“Oh! Look at you, you're so lovely," he continued his baby talk. He then gave her pussy three air kisses and continued his chatter for the next 20 minutes. What was originally very funny to Angelien had now become unbearable, she wanted to scream “IT WON’T TALK BACK TO YOU!” but had to lie silently, enduring his conversation with her own lips mute.
Finally, there was a knock on the door that signaled there was only five minutes to go. Thank you Lord! she thought.
Her client sat up at the knock, “Um, excuse me?” he called to her, like she hadn’t actually been there the whole time.
“Yes," Angelien replied lifting her head so that she was looking at him and trying to keep her features neutral.
“I’d like to extend my time," he said.
Holy shit, I can’t take much more of this. “We don’t actually do extensions for this sort of thing.” she told him. It wasn’t that he was doing anything bad, or that it was hard work. The only work she really had to do was hold still and bite her tongue while he talked to her pussy (that he called Angel, funnily enough) about his day, his worries and of course, this was all interspersed with him saying how beautiful her ‘snatch’ was. It quite simply, wasn’t something she wanted to continue.
Her client appeared to be a little disappointed but said OK and paid his money to Angelien. Oh shit, I was supposed to get that first, she thought, giving herself a mental head slap.
“You don’t think that would count as cheating do you?” he asked.
“No, not at all," Angelien replied as she ushered him out of the door."
