Review: Wuthering Frights (Dulcie O'Neil #4)

5 out of 5 Stars
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Author: H.P. Mallory
Rating: 5 Stars out of 5
Blurb:
A father she never knew existed,
An impossible decision that had to be made,
A lie she must keep to herself at all costs,
And the realization that every choice she makes has consequences.
Fairy and law enforcement agent, Dulcie O'Neil, has just discovered that her father is the Head of the Netherworld, and a double-dealing, illegal potions importer. Worse yet, she's now working for him.
Knight Vander, Dulcie's boyfriend and Head of the Association of Netherworld Creatures, is on to her father, but, in the process, will he discover Dulcie's secret? And if he does, will it mean his life?

Ohhhh Ms. Mallory, you've done it again! So moving - exceptionally written with unique relationship growth, enriching plot development, and our favorite butt-kicking heroine doing what she does best. This may even be my favorite Dulcie book thus far...which is saying a lot because I ADORE this series and H.P. Mallory's Jolie Wilkins series as well.

Dulcie really grew throughout this book. She tried her damnedest to stay true to her beliefs while balancing her forced deceit and feelings for Knight as well as her loyalty to her friends. We got to see an emotional side of Dulcie, dig a little bit deeper into her psyche, which made me love her even more (even when I wanted to just smack her and have her come clean to Knight - poor guy).

Dulcie's father plays the best kind of villain - manipulative, cold, power hungry. His presence is ominous while remaining more to the outside of the main story. Even when he wasn't in a scene, the reader can feel his presence weighing on the story and the choices made throughout.

I think my favorite part of this story was getting to know the potion-smuggling Quillan. His character really enabled readers to see the destructive powers of this illegal trade - and how constant compromise to your values can turn you into a shell of your former self. I'm still routing for Quillan though - maybe Dulcie can help give him hope for more.

I cannot say enough how much a loved this story. The ending almost killed me - waiting for the next in the series is going to be rather painful! But it is what I've come to expect from Ms. Mallory and only makes me hungry for more.
